Opal Coast cultural heritage

Festive Opal Coast

Did you know that every year in Winter, the people of Dunkirk are taking over the streets of the coastal town to celebrate France’s noisiest carnival ? With a colourful vibe enjoyed by locals and tourists alike, the colourful carnival of Dunkirk attracts an estimated 40,000 dressed up revellers marching, dancing and singing on the streets of the town.

A history influenced by the sea and rooted in the land

Enjoy a cultural break on the Opal Coast… Besides the extraordinary views hides a rich and unique heritage. There is something for everyone.

Culture vultures can head to fine arts as well as design and fashion museums while history buffs have impressive WW1 and WW2 sites on-hand.

CITÉ DE LA DENTELLE ET DE LA MODE

The Centre for Lace & Fashion is emblematic of a savoir-faire that is unique in the world : Calais Leavers lace. Set in a genuine lace factory, its vast galleries present the evolution of the manufacturing techniques, the lingerie and haute couture associated with lace, as well as its most
contemporary aspects. Exhibits by Chanel, Dior, Van Herpen, Chantal Thomas face hand-made lace from as far back as the renaissance.

Fort Mahon

Fort Mahon also known as Fort Vauban or Fort of Ambleteuse is located on the beach of the typical charming fishermen village. It is surrounded by sea water at high tide.

Cap Blanc Nez Obelisk

The Dover Patrol was a Royal Navy command of the First World War, watching over the Strait of Dover. After the war, plans were set up to erect a memorial to the Dover Patrol. In July 1921, a memorial at Leathercote Point near St Margaret’s Bay was unveiled. A twin memorial obelisk stands at Cap Blanc-Nez on the French side of the Channel.

The Blockhaus of Eperlecques

The bunker of Eperlecques is the biggest bunker in the North of France, an evidence of the gigantic projects of the German army in 1939-45. Open to the public since 1973, the listed monument displays an authentic launch pad with its V1 ready for takeoff.
