The history of French Châteaux
In France, during the 13th and 14th centuries, châteaux were aimed at defending rather than to be a residence. Originally, châteaux functioned as feudal communities but then, they became private residence of the nobility. The French Revolution in 1789 put an end to the monarchy and ended the era of royal residences.
You can find châteaux at most corners of France and never be far from at least one. Some regions are home to numerous châteaux and offer private tours, for example. To the question “How many châteaux are there in France?” there is no definitive answer. It all depends on what you mean by the word “château”.
